In Flatlands, Preston photographed "dead" photo paper - glossy black sheets, having been exposed to light and processed. Delicate striations and curls of white emerge, shapes that delineate the edges and underside of the photographic paper, picking up the camera’s flash. 


The final images are printed on the same kind of glossy photo paper that they originally portrayed.
